New Media Planning Guide

Beginning a Project
You have the funds and mandate to create a multimedia application or web site for your organization. Where do you start? Here's a checklist of things to think about before you begin.

Goals
What is the overall purpose of the project?
What do you want it to accomplish in terms of education, entertainment, communication, revenue, image and appeal?

Clear goals help define the scope of the project, and help you stay focused.

Audience
Who is your primary audience?
What are their unique characteristics?
How will they access and use your application?
What barriers might they face?

Knowing the audience helps the production team make better decisions about content, design and functionality.

Resources
What is your budget?
What personnel, expertise, equipment and supplies will you need to coordinate, develop and market this project?
What is the time line for the entire project?

An awareness of what resources you have, and what you will need, sets helpful parameters on the project.

Content
What do you want to say?
How much content do you already have on hand, and how much will need to be developed?
What visual, audio and text elements will you need for the project?

Excellent content is crucial to a successful website or multimedia application.

Medium
Which tool best communicates your content to the primary audience?
Is your primary audience comfortable using this medium?

Multimedia tools are wonderful, but are not always the best way to reach your audience and accomplish your goals.

The Vivid Media team would be happy to work with you on how best to accomplish your goals.
